It’s a well-known fact that the tech giant Amazon monitors the activity of its users to provide a more tailor-made online shopping experience. For example, if the website notices that you have begun purchasing dog toys and dog food, they may begin recommending dog beds and leashes. Although this approach is meant to provide users with more personalized ads, they have also been known to track the activity of their users (and their employees) for their own marketing purposes. This has led many Amazon fans to wonder what their Amazon data says about them and how they can prevent the website from monitoring their activity in the future.

What Does Your Amazon Data Say About You?

From your Amazon shopping account to your Fire TV search history and even your Alexa grocery list, Amazon keeps track of your data to give you a more robust experience with their products. However, many users believe there is a limit to the amount of data that Amazon should be collecting. But what information does it actually collect and what does your Amazon data say about you?

Voice commands given to Alexa are recorded and stored by Amazon, adding to the data that the company has on you. The same is true of anything you read on a Kindle device, any book you download through Audible or anything that you watch on Prime. This allows Amazon to build a comprehensive profile based on your interests.

If you routinely purchase baby formula through your Prime account, Amazon is more likely to recommend bottles and cribs. The same is true if you watch a lot of children’s programming with your family – Amazon will begin recommending similar content across their suite of products. Your activity tells Amazon exactly what kind of person you are, how you shop, and how it can better advertise to you.

How to Look Up Your Amazon Data

When it comes to your Amazon data, you can easily find out what kind of information Amazon has on you. Your first step is to request your data from Amazon. In order to do that, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Open Amazon and log into your account.
  2. Select the “All” button in the top left corner.
  3. Scroll down and click on Your Account.
  4. From the next page, select Customer Service.
  5. In the Help Library search bar, type “personal data” and hit Enter.
  6. Select the option to “Request Your Personal Information”.
  7. Follow the prompts on the next page.

Alternatively, you can also go directly to the Request My Data page by visiting this link. You will be asked to select which data you’re looking for from a drop-down menu. Select the option at the bottom that says “Request All Your Data.”

How to Get Rid of Your Amazon Data

Now that you have access to your data from Amazon, you’re likely wondering how you can get rid of it. First, decide which of the information you want to delete. Many people begin by eliminating their Alexa history, which can easily be done through the Alexa app or by visiting the Amazon website in your browser.

Delete Your Alexa Data

  1. On the Amazon website, hover over the menu on the right labeled “Account & Lists”.
  2. Select “Content & Devices.”
  3. Click on “Devices”.
  4. Select your Alexa.
  5. Choose “Manage Voice Recordings”.
  6. Click on “Delete”.

You may also want to get rid of your Amazon search history. This will give you more control over the data that Amazon has for you, but it will also give you a less-personalized shopping experience. You can view and manage your browsing history here, but you can also request that your Amazon account be closed and your information be deleted along with it.

Regardless of what you decide to do with your Amazon data, it’s important to be able to take control of the information that tech companies record based on your activity. Doing so will give you a better idea of how to protect yourself, and your data, in the future.
